FabFilter Pro-C 2 is an outstanding high-quality compressor plug-in designed for the most demanding audio engineers. It offers incredible sound and character, handling various tasks with style, from subtle mastering compression to upfront lead vocals, drum glue, and deep EDM pumping.
It takes a new approach by allowing you to directly create a new band at the desired frequency range, rather than splitting the spectrum with crossovers. The interactive multiband display ensures the rest of the spectrum remains untouched, and you can snap bands together for a traditional crossover system if needed.
Pro-C 2 comes with eight different, program-dependent compression styles, delivering beautiful sound. Besides classic compressor controls, it offers features like smooth lookahead, up to 4x oversampling, intelligent auto-gain and auto-release, a variable knee, hold, range, external side-chain triggering, variable stereo linking, and mid/side processing. All these are packed in a gorgeous Retina user interface.
The redesigned interface provides insightful metering with real-time displays, greatly improving workflow. The large animated level/knee display shows when, why, and how compression is applied. Accurate level meters show peak and loudness values, and the circular side-chain input meter makes threshold setting easy. The large side-chain EQ controller simplifies filtering the trigger signal.
You also get all the typical FabFilter features, such as perfectly tuned knobs, interactive MIDI Learn, undo/redo, A/B switch, Smart Parameter Interpolation, an extensive help file with interactive hints, sample-accurate automation, and advanced optimization.
New features in version 2 include five new compression styles (Vocal, Mastering, Bus, Punch, and Pumping), range setting, a mix setting, side-chain EQ section, full-screen mode, accurate level and gain change meters, smooth lookahead, retina and high DPI support, hold, custom knee, optional MIDI triggering, audition triggering option, and multiple interface sizes. It's available in various formats (VST, VST3, Audio Units, AAX Native, AudioSuite - both 64-bit and 32-bit, and RTAS - 32-bit only).
Using FabFilter Pro-C2 is a breeze. First, open the plug-in in your audio editing software. You can choose from eight different compression styles depending on your needs, like using the Vocal style for lead vocals or Mastering for final touches.
When adjusting the settings, start with the basic compressor controls. The range setting can limit the maximum gain change, while the mix setting scales the gain change from 0% to 200%. Use the side-chain EQ section to filter the trigger signal as you like.
The lookahead feature can be enabled or disabled. Enabling it gives smoother compression but adds a bit of latency. If you need zero latency, just turn it off.
For the knee setting, you can customize it from a hard knee to a 72 dB soft knee to get saturation - like effects.
When it comes to MIDI, you can use MIDI Learn to assign MIDI controllers to different parameters. The optional MIDI triggering lets you trigger the compressor with MIDI signals.
Some things to keep in mind: Make sure your audio editing software supports the formats in which Pro-C2 is available (VST, VST3, etc.). When using the oversampling feature, higher levels might use more system resources.
